A red-hued cliff hides Praia da Falésia, a splendid stretch of sand located in the Algarve. Its golden sand and limpid waters invite you to relax and enjoy a wide variety of activities. Apart from gorgeous beaches, the coast of the Algarve also boasts spectacular cliffs and unbeatable sunsets. Although many people may think otherwise, this region is much more than just sun and sand.

And to help you make the most of your getaway, RIU Hotels & Resorts gives you the Hotel Riu Guarana, where you'll enjoy the best all-inclusive service, spacious and perfectly appointed facilities, and a varied gastronomic offer.

The Algarve, an amazing place

The beaches you'll find in the Algarve are surrounded by a privileged environment. Praia da Falésia will amaze you with its eight kilometres of golden sand, blue waters and the incredible cliff that surrounds it. On the other hand, on Praia de Olhos de Água, or 'Eyes of Water' beach, you'll be able to see the curious phenomenon for which it is named: fresh water springs that flow through rocks on the beach and into the sea. And on Praia de la Marinha, one of the most famous beaches in the area, you'll find an authentic paradise with turquoise waters and reddish cliffs that form a gorgeous landscape.

The villages of the Algarve, both coastal and interior, have a special charm. We recommend you spend time getting to know some of them, like Marina de Vilamoura, which has established itself as the departure point for boat trips to the different islands along the coast of the Algarve, and the spectacular Ría Formosa Nature Park. You can also visit Loulé, a city of artisans filled with copper, wicker and pottery craft workshops; Alte, one of the most picturesque villages of the Algarve for its narrow streets and white houses; and Sagres, the town where Cabo de São Vicente is located. Don't leave without admiring the spectacular views and watching its breathtaking sunset from its famous lighthouse.

In Faro, the capital of the Algarve, you'll discover fantastic spots, especially in its Cidade Velha, or old town, where you can stroll through cobblestone streets and squares, go up to its castle, walk along its walls, and see the astonishing Capela dos Ossos, or Bone Chapel, in the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. Another obligatory stop is the Plaza de la Catedral, the cathedral square, where the Episcopal palace and Seminary are located, both emblematic buildings.

Gastronomy in the Algarve

In the towns and cities of the Algarve, you'll be able to savour home-style recipes and traditional dishes of the region that you're going to love. Amongst the most typical dishes, you'll find cataplana, a fish and seafood stew; xarém, a thick soup made with corn, clams and sausages from the region; and many other recipes made with meat and seafood from the Algarve, like cod and shellfish. And, we recommend you try pastéis de Belém, a traditional Portuguese dessert made with puff pastry and custard.

Church of São Lourenço dos Matos:

This gem from the Baroque era is one of the greatest treasures of the Algarve's heritage. The outside is sober and elegant, and the main chapel is covered in bright tiles that surround a stunning gilded altarpiece.

Sierra do Caldeirão:

In the northern part of the Algarve, the rolling foothills of this small mountain range are found. Far from the bustle of the coast, here you'll find towns still anchored in their traditions.

Sudoeste Nature Park:

An area that is protected to preserve the incredible beauty of its landscapes, notable for their abrupt cliffs. This zone is inhabited by numerous bird species and has abundant and varied flora.
